This is a picture of me and my mom from last December, which was also the last time I saw her along with the rest of my family.

Most kids can’t wait for the day they move out but don’t end up doing it until they’re like 20 or 21. I come from a very family-oriented household, and I moved out two months after I graduated high school. I miss my mom.

My parents tell me that the day they first flew to America, my mom had to fly here first with my brother and wait a couple of days for my dad to arrive due to some work complications. She spoke zero English and had nothing but a twenty dollar bill when she touched American soil. She didn’t complain, she just made it happen.

Growing up, my dad wassn’t home a lot due to his career in the Navy. My beast of a mom took care of all three of us kids. As much as a handful as we all were, my mom manged to get us all dressed, feed us, get us to and from school, make sure we did our homework, and get us into bed.

Like any other growing teenager, I grew apart from her. I got into girls, alcohol, music, drugs, etc. The usual. But during my senior year, when it hit me that I wouldn’t be living with my family anymore, I strived to amend the bond between us. We grew incredibly close during senior year; I talked to her about almost everything. I remember when my relationship of four years ended, she heard me crying in the middle of the night so she got out of bed and comforted me till I could sleep again.

Now she lives in Japan with my dad and sister. She didn’t want to move, but she knows my dad’s career holds up the family, and so she doesn’t complain about it. Despite the miles, she still seems to cheer me up and help me through my hard times.

My mom is Superwoman.
